Willie Nelson

“Trigger Happy”

I’ve got to admit that as a kid, I was never really exposed to country music, and as a teen, when I heard the collaboration of Waylon & Willie and their outlaw country music, I liked it…a lot…and I was hooked!

This painting was long overdue! Its another collaboration with photographer Rick Kern of Austin, TX who graciously allowed me to paint from his cool photo.

Willie Nelson is an American country music singer-songwriter, as well as an author, poet, actor, and activist. The critical success of the albums Shotgun Willie (1973), Red Headed Stranger (1975) and Stardust (1978), made Willie one of the most recognized artists in country music. He was one of the main figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960s as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound. Willie was one of the four Highwaymen with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson.

My painting of Willie, shown as he is here in 2014, along with his famous guitar Trigger, was a must for this portrait. And listening again to his life’s work while I painted, took me right back to my early impressionable days. He describes the influence of Trigger in his style: “One of the secrets to my sound is almost beyond explanation. My battered old Martin guitar, Trigger, has the greatest tone I’ve ever heard from a guitar.

And now, the recent new cd release “Pancho and Lefty” by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard adds fuel to the fire behind this great legend.

I hope you like what I’ve done here. I think Willie agrees!
